Now that the MLB Playoffs Have Started, I Only Have a Few Weeks Until They’re Over….

Hi Ladies -

For all of you out there that have minimal to no interest in baseball, there is good news and bad news.  The bad news is that since the playoffs are starting, we will hear alot about the sport…not the best of times.  The good news is that we only have a few more weeks until baseball goes on hiatus for 4-5 months….definitely a bright spot ahead!!!

So, I figure for the start of the playoffs, it would be helpful to outline what teams have made the playoffs…

National League (NL):

NL East: Philadelphia Phillies

NL Central: Chicago Cubs

NL West: LA Dodgers

NL Wildcard: Milwaukee Brewers

American League (AL):

AL East: Tampa Bay Rays

AL Central: Chicago White Sox (NOTE: The Chicago White Sox claimed their position on Tuesday night in a one game playoff against the Minnesota Twins…poor Twins couldn’t take the pressure)

AL West: LA Angels

AL WIldcard: Boston Red Sox

For the first round of the playoffs, a series consists of 5 games…whichever team get 3 wins first, wins the series and goes to the National League or American League Championship games.  In The second round of playoffs, the series consists of 7 games and the winner of each series (whoever gets to 4 wins first) goes to the World Series…also consisting of 7 games.

So for the first round this is who is playing who:

National League:

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Milwaukee Brewers

Chicago Cubs vs. LA Dodgers

American League:

Boston Redsox vs. LA Angels

Tampa Bay Rays vs. Chicago White Sox

All of the games (except Tampa Bay/White Sox) start on Wednesday… I don’t plan on watching much of it since Dirty Sexy Money is back on…plus I am really into Lipstick Jungle…but at least I know the topline information in case it comes up in conversation.

OK, so that is the quick and dirty rundown of the playoffs ahead.  I surfed around to see if there was anything particularly cool/exciting about the 2008 playoffs…I couldn’t find much right away, however one cool thing that I observed is that this year, there is a chance that we could experience an “Intra city” world series…meaning the team from the American League and the Team from the National League are both from the same city…this could happen based on two scenarios:

  • NL Chicago Cubs vs. AL Chicago White Sox OR
  • NL LA Dodgers vs. AL LA Angels

The last time we had an intra city World Series was in 2000 when the New York Mets (NL) played the New York Yankees (AL).  The Yankees won the series 4-1.

Alright, I will be back tomorrow with some additional baseball news.  I am thinking about getting you the information you need for the baseball “awards”…most girls tend to like awards…my faves are the Oscars & the Emmy’s…so, think of it in that manner, but without all of the fashion and red carpet drama….

Mondays Are Tough Enough…At least I can talk Sports Highlights

So…I did it…I actually had a lazy Sunday…I am sure I am going to pay for it later, but it felt great to nap and really do nothing.

Apparently this was an “exciting” sports weekend…so wouldn’t it be good to know exactly what happened so that you can talk about it?  I am covering the key highlights from College Football, Major League Baseball and the NFL…so you should be good to go!!!  I am going to warn you…since it was a busy sports weekend, its a long post…so just skip down to the sport that you care about if need be…

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

In college football, the biggest news was that 3 of the top 4 teams were defeated this past week.

  • USC lost to the Oregon State Beavers – USC was #1 going into the week and they lost to an unranked team….definitely not a good position to be in…needless to say, they are not #1.
  • #3 University of Georgia lost to #8 Alabama…this was the game that I wrote about earlier in the weekend…bascially Georgia’s tactic to create a blackout, proved unsuccessful…and as the ‘Bama strength & coniditioning coach predicted, Georgia was dressed for their own funeral.  Alabama has now moved up to #2 going into this week.
  • #4 Florida lost to University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) – another unranked team…therefore Florida is no longer in the top 4

So, needless to say we have a new list of Top 10 teams…the coveted #1 spot goes to Oklahoma.  This is the 96th time that Oklahoma is #1 in the AP Poll, which means that they have tied the record that Notre Dame holds.

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Now, on to Baseball…for pretty much all of the teams, Sunday was the end of regular season…which means we have a better understanding of who will be in the playoffs.  For the players on teams that didn’t make it…their vacation begins.  Speaking of, I could really use a vacation… and for the teams that are in the Playoffs, the end of October when the World Series starts can’t come soon enough.

  • The Philadelphia Phillies clinched the National League East  Championship on Saturday…for Philadelphians, this is a big deal…this is the first time since 1980 – 1981 that the Phillies have been in the playoffs for two consecutive years…
  • The Brewers clinched the National League Wildcard spot. This will be their first time in the playoffs since 1982.  The other cool fact to note is that the last time the Brewers were in the playoffs, they were in the American league…so…this is the first time that the Brewers are in the playoffs as a National League Team.  The Brewers will take on the Phillies in Philadelphia on Wednesday.
  • As I indicated earlier last week, if the Phillies and the Brewers made it to the playoffs, the Mets would not…this was the case when the Mets lost today…even worse, the Mets lost their final game in Shea stadium…not a good day for New York.
  • The American League Central is the only division that is still undecided.  Tomorrow the White Sox will play the Detroit Tigers in a make up game from a rainout earlier in the season.  If the White Sox win, there will be a one game play-off between the White Sox and the Twins for the American League Central championship…I find it funny that this is “drama” to a sports fan…I would much rather watch Gossip Girl to get my fill of drama…but that might just be me.

NFL

So a few big things happened this weekend with the football games…

THE JETS:

  • The Jets – well first off, they wore blue and gold throw back jerseys…I thought that this look was good for Brett Favre…for two reasons, the whole Jets wear green confuses me because I am used to Favre wearing green for the Packers…secondly, blue is a really nice color on Favre…in my opinion at least.
What do you think of Brett Favre in blue?

What do you think of Brett Favre in blue?

  • Also with the Jets – Brett Favre threw 6 touchdowns, which means that he broke the record that Namath used to have for most touchdowns in a game by a Jets QB

REDSKINS vs COWBOYS

  • The Redskins handed Cowboys their first loss this season.  As I indicated in the Sunday post, the game was being played at Texas Stadium, which means that the Cowboys will not be able to hold an undefeated record in their last season in Texas Stadium
  • Also, the Redskins have gone four straight games without an offensive turnover

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS VS DENVER BRONCOS

  • The Chiefs defeated the Broncos, ending the Chiefs 12 game losing streak.  Their last win was 11 months ago.  This was the Broncos first loss this season.
  • Tony Gonzalez, the Chiefs Tight End, is one yard short of Shannon Sharpe’s record for most receiving yards by a tight end.  I watched part of this game and one thing that I think is different about girls…we might have just let Gonzalez have the last yard to get the record and be done with it…but we need to wait for next week

BUFFALO BILLS vs ST LOUIS RAMS

  • I feel like I have St. Louis in my head constantly this weekend since I watched the Sex & The City movie 3 times this weekend…if you’ve seen the move, you know what I am talking about…but I digress….so the Bills defeated the Rams, who are really bad this year.  The Bills’ win makes them undefeated and for the first time in 16 years, the Bills are 4-0.

Ok, so lots that went on this weekend….I am psyched that I can get back to some good shows and a break from sports for a few days…I will be back on Wednesday with some key information for the start of the baseball playoffs…for now have a great Monday (as good as they can be:-))

Yet another Sunday of watching Football

Today is going to be a lazy day…the weather around me is not great, so it’s going to be one of those lay on the couch and relax days…that is, if I can really relax…I am notorious for finding something that needs to get done, but I will try.  So far, I have watched Sex & The City: The Movie twice today…I take after my mom and have the ability to watch a movie over and over again….However, this means I will need to watch the football games for the remainder of the day….I did some research for this week’s games that should help you if you are going to some social event or just sitting around at home with football on…

First to note…this is the first week of the season where there are teams with BYES…so, if you are surrounded by Lions, Colts, Dolphins, Patriots, Giants or Seahawks…well you might be in luck and not have to watch footaball today…these teams are all on BYE.

Now some key games this week:

Green Bay Packers vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Sun. 1pm, FOX)

  • This game is called the “Battle of the Bays”…Green BAY vs Tampa BAY…I mean, this is not the most impressive fact, but simple enough…
  • Matt Bryant, the kicker for the Tampa Bay Bucs, buried his 3 month old son yesterday, but it is rumored he will play today…very sad stuff.
  • The Packers cornerback(defensive position that covers the wide receiver), Al Harris was injured last weekend.  He has never missed a game in his 11 year career
  • Tampa Bay leads all NFL team with 46 passing first downs

Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys (Sun. 4:15PM EST, FOX)

  • Last week Cowboys defeated Green Bay Packers at Lambeau field for the first time in the team’s history.
  • This week, the Redskins will play their last regular season game in Dallas’ Texas Stadium
  • The Redskins’ QBs have not thrown an interception in the last 7 games, which is the longest active streak in the league
  • Jason Taylor, a Defensive End for the Redskins has started 133 straight games and WILL NOT start today because he is injured
  • Jerry Jones, the owner of the Cowboys was fined 25K this week for comments he made a few weeks ago about the officiating this season.

Philadelphia Eagles at the Chicago Bears (Sun. 8:15PM EST, NBC)

  • Two of the key offensive players on the Eagles, Brian Westrbook(RB) and Donovan McNabb(QB) are both injured….it is expected that McNabb will play in today’s game, however Westbrook is listed as quesitonable…this means the player to watch is Buckhalter, who should be getting a lot of carries in place of Westbrook
  • The star punt returner, Devin Hester, for the Bears is also injured and is not expected to start
  • Last week’s touchdown pass from McNabb put him in the record books for the Eagles, he surpassed Ron Jaworski for all time passing TDs for the Eagle’s franchise
  • Last year the Bears beat the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field…the Bears lead the overall record between the two teams 27-11-1….the Eagles definitely need to step it up.

As you can see, I am kind of uninspired by the match ups this week…there has been a ton of good sports news this weekend, which I will recap for you tomorrow morning to get you ready for the Monday morning watercooler conversations that might occur….for now, I am off to “relax”…

A little Sex & The City…a little College Game Day

Hi Ladies…

So, you might be noticing a pattern and a skill that I have…it’s called negotiation.  I was able to control the TV on Friday night and watch my new Sex & the City: The Movie DVD and in return, we need to have College Game Day on tomorrow….little does my husband know that I will be heading to the mall for some sales:-)

This week ESPN’s College Game Day will be hosted at University of Georgia outside of Sanford Stadium.  #3 Georgia will be going against #8 Alabama…and there has been a lot of “noise” around this game.(ESPN, 7:45PM)

  • This is the first time in 10 years that ESPN’s College Game Day will be at Georgia
  • Georgia is wearing black jerseys for the 3rd time in modern history (I find this fascinating…as black is definitely slimming…especially for all of those big defensive  players…).
  • I found the black jersey info very interesting (go figure…I am a girl)…so I wanted to see why.  Well apparently the Georgia coach, Mark Richt has ordered that this game would be a “blackout”…therefore the entire team will be dressed in all black, including the coaches.  In addition, all of the Bulldog fans also have been ordered to dress in black.  There has been controversary around this “blackout” because Alabama strength coach Scott Cochran has also been heard saying that they’ll be dressed that way because they’ll be attending their own “f*$king funeral”  – guys can be so mean…
  • Some other fun facts are that both teams are in the SEC (South Eastern Conference)…Alabama is No. 1 in all time SEC regular season wins and Georgia is #3.  However, Alabama has no Heisman trophy winners, but Georgia has 2.

Other games that might be on around you….

THE BIG 10: #22 Illinois vs. #12 Penn State (ABC, 8PM EST)

  • Coach Joe Paterno, in his 43rd season at Penn State, coached the second half of last week’s game from the coaches box…the big question is…will he be on the sideline next week?  The big question for me is…why not just retire already and enjoy the fall/winter in the desert?
  • Two defensive lineman, who have been suspended for the past 3 weeks for possessing marijuana in their apartment, will return to the field this week (Maurice Evans and Abe Koroma)
  • Penn State’s stadium is called “Beaver Stadium” and holds 107,282 people… it always go back and forth with Michigan as the largest stadium in the country.

Arkansas at #7 Texas (ABC, 3:30PM EST)

  • These two schools used to be bitter rivals (kind of like LC & Heidi on The Hills).  This bitter rivalry occurred during their time in the Southwest Conference until 1992, but that broke up and now Texas is in the Big 12 and Arkansas is in the SEC.
  • Since 1992, the two schools have only played 3 times and Arkansas has won 2 of the 3 times…can Arkansas keep their lead???
  • Arkansas’ starting running back AND back-up running back were both first round draft picks in the NFL last year after their junior year (Darren McFadden went to the Oakland Raiders and Felix Jones went to the Cowboys).

So…enjoy your Saturday…I know I am so looking forward to mine…even if I have to watch some sports…tomorrow I will be back with the facts you need for the Sunday NFL games.

Suicide Pool Picks of the Week (Week 4)

OK girls…I am super busy tonight, but I wanted to get out some advice for any of you who are participating in a suicide pool.

In case you are new to the term “suicide pool” let me explain…they are also known as elimination pools.  They are a great way for you to win some money and gain a little interest in a game or two each weekend…the premise is pretty simple, you pay a fee up front to be in the pool…each week you choose one team that you think will win their game.  You can only choose a team once, so it is important that you choose wisely.  If your pick loses their game that week, you are out of the pool…

Right now we are in Week 4 of the NFL….since moat suicide pools seem to happen in the office, I will make sure to post my suggestions by Thursday night so that if you need some help you can get it before your Friday deadline.

This week’s top choices…

1.  Buffalo Bills for sure – they are playing the St. Louis Rams who look like a high school team and the Bills are 3-0.

2.  Jacksonville Jaguars – also a good option.  They are playing the Houston Texans who haven’t been good for the past few years and still are “building” their team…

3.  Denver Broncos – my final option.  They are playing the Kansas City Chiefs, who can’t figure out which quarterback to play…after three weeks and three different quarterback tries…they have no other options.

Tomorrow I will be back with some college football facts to get you ready for some College Game Day knowledge…

TGIF!

Race for the Wild Card (and I don’t mean a credit card on a shopping spree!)

Alright ladies, I am back with the information you need to know for what’s ahead in the days ahead…

So, one of the biggest events right now is the baseball race for the Pennant.  The race for the pennant?  Basically this means that there are 6 divisions in MLB and the teams in each are vying to see who comes out on top for the playoffs.  Now, the tricky part is that 8 teams make the playoffs…at this point when I try to have this explained to me, I usually tune out, but I figured I would give you the background.

  • Until 1995 there used to only be two divisions in the American League & the National League (East & West)…thus the winner of each division would make it to the league championship.  Then, the winner of that would make it to the World Series…it was simple then…but then somehow it was decided to make it more complex.
  • In 1995 each league was divided into 3 divisions (East, West and Central).  Well, when it came to the playoffs, there were 3 division winners in each league and that made it impossible for the playoffs to work…thus the “WILDCARD” came about.
  • The Wildcard is given to the team in each league with the best record who hasn’t clinched the first place spot…therefore there is one National League wildcard and one American League wildcard.
  • The additional series in the playoffs is called the “Dvision Series”, so now there are 8 teams instead of 4 vying for the coveted World Series Commisioner’s Trophy.

Another important term to know in this complex championship process is “THE MAGIC NUMBER.”  To me, the magic number would be the discount they are giving at Bloomingdales or Banana Republic…very easy to figure out and usually results in a cute new outfit.  Unfortunately, that is not what the “MAGIC NUMBER” in baseball is.

  • The MAGIC NUMBER is the combination of first place team’s wins and the second place team’s losses that will clinch the division for the first place team.  HUH????
  • Here’s an example, right now the Philadelphia Phillies’ magic number is 4…this means that any combination of 4 Phillies’ wins and Mets’ losses clinches the division for the Phillies.  So, if the Phillies win the next 2 games and the Mets lose the next 2 games, the Phillies will have won the division.

Now, I am not sure if I have helped clarify any of these confusing elements of baseball, but at any rate, here is a listing of who is still in the playoff races:

National League East: Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets

National League Central: Chicago Cubs (clinched)

National League West: Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks

National League WILDCARD: Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets and the Milwaukee Brewers

American League East: Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays

American League Central: Chicago White Sox and the Minnesota Twins

American League West: Los Angeles Angels (clinched)

American League WILDCARD: Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays

OK…that’s enough baseball talk for the day…tomorrow I will have some key info on the big College Football games this weekend.

If I Want to Watch the Emmy’s Tonight, I Need to Watch Football During The Day…

So today there are apparently a lot of good sports on television…I have already negotiated that if we flip through all of the different games/matches on television during the day today, I can have the main television for the Emmy’s tonight.  Today there is the last round of the Ryder Cup, a number of baseball games with playoff implications and of course all of the NFL games.  Tonight, there is the last game in Yankee Stadium and Sunday Night Football…lots to watch.  I will definitely flip over to the Yankee game just to see what celebs attend that aren’t at the Emmys.

If you also need to watch the NFL games…here are some facts for a few of the games to keep you in the know…

Giants v Bengals (CBS, 1PM EST)

  • The Bengals’ QB, Carson Palmer is without a touchdown pass in his first 2 games in 2008
  • The Giants’ QB, Eli Manning was projected to be the #1 draft pick in 2004.  The San Diego Chargers were going to pick him, but Eli wanted to play for the New York Giants because of the potential endorsement opportunities he would have by playing for a New York team.  Manning won out and started his career on the Giants.
  • The Cincinnati Bengals Defense has only one sack so far this season, which is the lowest total in the NFL

Eagles v Steelers (CBS, 4PM EST)

  • The Steelers haven’t won in Philadelphia in their last 7 tries.
  • This is the first time that the Steelers will be playing in Lincoln Financial Field during the regular season.
  • During WWII, the Eagles & Steelers combined to become one team – known as the Steagles because both teams lost a lot of players to the war.  The combined team only lasted for one season.
  • Over the past week, there have been a lot of rumors about the Steelers’ QB Ben Roethlisberger, who injured his shoulder last week.  It was rumored that he separated his shoulder and would be out for the season, however we have learned that he has a shoulder sprain and will be starting against the Eagles.

Cowboys v. Packers (NBC, 8PM EST)

  • The Cowboys have made the playoffs 22 of the 24 times that they have started a season with wins in the first 2 games.
  • The Packers have never lost to the Cowboys at Lambeau Field
  • Terrell Owens has caught 28 touchdowns from Tony Romo, making the Owens/Romo combination the league’s top quarterback/wide receiver combo since 2006.

And of course, for the Sunday night game…all eyes need to be on the crowd to see if Jessica Simpson shows up to support her boyfriend Tony Romo…

Alright ladies…I think you can definitely impress people with these facts today…have a great day and get ready for some exciting Emmy’s tonight.

I’d Rather Go Shopping than Watch College Football…

It’s Saturday…which for the guys means its Collge Game Day…for me it means a day I can go shopping since Fall sales are the BEST!

I am not going to lie, I didn’t go to a big college football school but I am forced to watch the games every week.  I am pretty excited because I am going to a West Virginia University football game in a few weeks…and I hear it will be a good time.  Anyway, you need to start College Game Day by watching ESPN from 10 -12am EST and seeing who Corso is going to pick for the game of the week.  I could write a whole post about Corso, but basically here is what you need to know:

·     ESPN announces where College Game Day will be hosted on Mondays – its basically at whichever college will have the best match up

·     At then end of the show, Corso puts on the mascot head on to show which team he picks.  The crowd of students go crazy at this point in the show.

So, for this weekend, the three biggest games are:

#6 LSU at #10 Auburn (Sat 7:45 EST, ESPN) – this is where College Game Day will be hosted this week

#3 Georgia at Arizona St (Sat 8 EST, ABC)

#4 Florida at Tennessee (Sat 3:30 EST, CBS)

Here is a fact or two for each of these games….

1) LSU v Auburn game:

·     The 1996 matchup was nicknamed the “Fire Game”. In 1996 Auburn’s old basketball arena, nicknamed “The Barn”, burnt down right outside the stadium because a tailgater left a hot grill too close to the building… the fire was huge, could be seen the whole time on TV, flames were up as high as the upper deck of the stadium, but they kept playing anyway…

·     the game is known as the “Tiger Bowl”…both teams are the Tigers (which should make Corso’s pick interesting).

·     Charles Barkley went to Auburn, but left after his junior year for the NBA

2) Georgia v Arizona

·     This is the first time in 58 years that Georgia has traveled west of the Mississippi for a non-conference game other than a bowl.

·     Ryan Seacrest, REM & the B52’s all attended Univerity of Georgia

·     This could have been a much bigger game, but Arizona State choked and lost to UNLV last week.  Arizona State had been ranked in the teens until last week.

3) Univ of Florida v Tenn

·     The game is being played at Tennessee, which is one of the biggest stadiums in the country – its called Neyland Stadium

·     Gatorade is called Gatorade because it was invented at University of Florida (the Gators)

·     Peyton Manning attended University of Tennessee and is the Volunteers (the Vols) all time leading passer

Alright girls…I am not going to lie…this post took me a little longer to research due to my lack of knowledge of the sport, but I will study up this week to get you some good facts for next week!

Check back in tomorrow for some NFL highlights….have fun today!

What is the Ryder Cup Anyway?

Usually I might not write about golf, but apparently amidst all of the other sporting events that will be on the television this weekend (football, baseball, etc) the Ryder Cup is on too.  I guess the event is a big deal because it only happens every other year…so, if you happen to be somewhere where the Ryder Cup is on, here are some facts that will keep you in the know…

  • The Ryder Cup is a golf event that is “match play” style between United States & Europe and takes place in Louisville, KY this year.  Match play means that whichever player has the least strokes on a hole wins the hole and gets 1 point.  For example, if Phil Mickelson (USA) wins the first 4 holes and Sergio Garcia (EUR) wins the next two holes, the score would indicate that Mickeson is “2 up.” At the end of the round of golf, whichever player has the most points wins the match (the match end early if it is impossible for one side to catch up).

  • The last time the US team won was in 1999.

  • The Ryder Cup occurs every 2 years.  The last time the US won (’99) was also the last time that it occurred in an odd year.  In 2001, the tournament was scheduled for the week after 9/11 and then rescheduled for a year later…hence it now falls every “even” year.
  • This year’s captain for the US team is Paul Azinger and the captain gor team Europe is Nick Faldo (part of the winning team in ‘04 & ‘06)

  • Half of the US team this year is rookies, and the youngest player on this year’s team is Anthony Kim, age 23, who is looking like he could be Tiger’s main competition over the next decade or so.

These should be enough good facts to impress the golf enthusiasts in your life (hopefully this won’t be on for too long)…but if you are like me, watching golf is not your favorite…I usually recommend crowd watching…you can count on some good looking, preppy guys drinking some beers.  Also, the wives and kids of the golfers are usually spotted…check out Phil Mickelson’s cute family…

Catch up on some college football stats for the weekend, tomorrow morning…

When A Hit in Baseball Really Matters

Most baseball fans are just excited when someone on their favorite team gets a hit….it means one more chance to score a run and win a game.  I, on the other hand could really care less about hits in baseball or really the sport in general…I truly would probably watch paint dry and be more entertained.  But..these past few weeks baseball has kind of caught my attention.

On Tuesday night, Derek Jeter had the chance to surpass the great Lou Gehrig’s record for hits in Yankee Stadium.  Did he pass it??? Well of course, or trust me, I wouldn’t be writing about it.

Here’s what you need to know…

·     Lou Gehrig played with the NY Yankees in 1923, which was the opening season of Yankee Stadium.  Through his 16 year career there he had 1,269 hits. He was known as the “Iron Horse” because of his durability, he never missed a start until he was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease (aka ALS).

·     Jeter had two hits in the Tuesday night game…but his record breaking hit was a single in the first inning

·     Yankee Stadium is scheduled to close its doors for good on Sunday, September 21, 2008, which means Jeter’s record can NEVER be broken

·     Unfortunately for Jeter, his hit did not help the Yankees make it to the playoffs, which is the first time since 1993.

Besides Yankee stadium, the only other stadium that is closing its’ doors after this season is the Mets’ Shea Stadium in NY…looks like NYC fans have a lot to look forward to when their new stadiums open for the 2009 season.

My advice ladies is that on Sunday…in between the football watching that you might have to do…it might not hurt to tune into the final Yankees game at Yankee stadium as it is sure to be filled with tons of celebs…which I know will keep my interest for awhile…

Catch up on the Ryder Cup tomorrow.
