The Phillies Take on QVC? and Your Week 8 Suicide Picks

So today I did a lot of reading up on the Tampa Tribune website and the Philly.com website and not surprisingly the stories and the mood were very different.  On one hand, you had the Philadelphia news site with a big headline “Champs at Last” and the top stories were all about the Philadelphia World Series win…the upcoming presidential election was further down on the list of stories.  The pictures showed the excitement of the fans and the players.  On the other side, the Tampa Bay site showed a much smaller picture of the disappointed Rays’ players, the story was very subdued and the presidential election was the top story.  I will say though, that the Rays’ fans do have a lot of class…even though their team lost, they are still having a welcome back party for their American League Champions…

The other thing that I found interesting was when the players from both teams were interviewed about their plans for the next week…the losing Rays players weren’t sure what to do with themselves after having a super extended season.  The Phils on the other hand don’t have time to think about their plans…they have stuff all lined up…

  • To start…the red, white and blue team, aka the Phillies, will be floating along Market Street and Broad Street in the World Series parade on Friday..it is anticipated that over 1 million fans will come out to see the parade and that traffic and the transit system will be gridlocked…I can only imagine the stories that we will hear.
  • Super hottie Cole Hamels…I know, there is a small obssession that I have with him…he read off the Top 10 List on Letterman on Thursday Night…you can read up on the “Top 10 Things that went through Cole Hamels’ Mind after winning the World Series” on the PhillyGossip.com website….my favorite is #10 “Maybe I’ll [Cole Hamels] get to be on “Dancing with Stars.”  I bet his partner would be Julianna Hough, that is if she gets better from her injury right now.
  • In addition to his Letterman appearance, Hamels, along with Shayne “the Flyin’ Hawaiin” Victorino with 1980 World Series champ Mike Schmidt will be appearing on QVC on Friday Night to promote 2008 World Series Memoriabilia…not much else I can say about that one….I am sure there will be other opportunies coming their way
Hamels should always go with the backwards hat look...
Hamels should always go with the backwards hat look…

Now…I thought that this was a great segway into NFL football news…how ironic is this?  Apparently there is a MLB Fantasy Football league on CBSSportsline…meaning, real MLB players are in the FF league…I kid you not when I say that it is rumored that Brad Lidge (Phillies closing pitcher from World Series final game) will be playing Eric Hinske (Rays final batter who struck out swinging) in fantasy football this week, as reported on the Rays Report by Mark Lancaster.  Both fantasy football teams are 3-5…so it is an important week for these two guys.  Will Lidge be a guys’ guy and go for the win…or will he give Hinske the benefit of the doubt and play his worst line-up to let Hinske win?

Week 8 Suicide Picks:

1.  Chicago Bears over Detroit Lions – the Lions are 0-7…plain and simple…I don’t think they will win a game all season.

2.  Tampa Bay Bucs over Kansas City Cheifs – The Chiefs are on their third quarterback…and really, do the Bucs want to come home with a loss after their baseball team just lost the World Series…come on boys…take one for the team and put it all into the game.

3.  Jacksonville Jaguars over Cincinnati Bengals – The Bengals are 0-8…again, I just don’t see them winning…they stink.  In addition, the Bengals are winless in the last 4 games against the Jaguars.

I will be back with college football and I guess I need to start studying up on basketball (both NBA and college)…Have a fantastic Halloween…

The Curse of Billy Penn is Over!!!

Ladies….it seems like Philadelphia sports fans have something to cheer about….the Philadelphia Phillies have won the World Series!  Philadelphia fans have been waiting for 25 years for a championship and 28 years for a Philadelphia Phillies World Series Championship!

I have to say that for a girl…it was definitely easy to watch the final game (Game 5) of the World Series.  First off, it was split into two days…I have a short attention span and even I could do it.  Part of Game 5 was on Monday and lasted for 5-1/2 innings until a horrendous rain/wind storm caused the game to be suspended…a 2-2 tie for the Phillies and Tampa Bay Rays.  The controversary that ensued for the following 48 hours was crazy.  Part 2 of Game 5 kicked off at 8:37pm on Wednesday evening and only last 90 minutes…not too tough to watch.  The Phillies won the game 4-3.

The World Series Pile Up (FoxSports.com)

The World Series Pile Up (FoxSports.com)

Here are some of the key “drama” points around the World Series Championship game:

  • Philadelphians believe that they have been under the curse of Billy Penn.    If you are not from Philadelphia, the story behind this is basically that prior to 1987 the statue of William Penn atop of City Hall was the highest point in the city.  Since then, several buildings have been built higher than that.  Many people blamed the continuous Philadelphia sports championship “drought” on a curse from Billy Penn for constructing buildings higher than the William Penn statue.  Just in the past year, when the Comcast building (the newest tall building) was finished…a small sized statue of William Penn was placed at the top of the building with the hopes to break the curse…looks like it may have paid off…this building just officially opened in June 2008.

  • The closing pitcher Brad Lidge finished Game 5 undefeated…this means he finished 48-0 for closing a Phillies game.  He became the first Philadelphia pitcher to be perfect in regular season saves.

  • Cole Hamels…ok girls, by now if you have been reading you should know a little about him.  First, he is super hot.  Two, he is married to a former playboy centerfold.  And three, his is an amazing pitcher.  Hamels started in game 1 and game 5 of the World Series.  He ended the post season undefeated and was named the MVP of the World Series.  Not only did he win a trophy and the title,  but also a Chevy Corvette.  Also, not only did he get to celebrate his the World Series Championship on Wednesday…but also his wife’s 30th birthday.  That’s right girls…his wife Heidi is “cougar-esque” …married to Cole at the age of 24.

  • Last year the Philles were “honored” as the first team to hit 10,000 losses…this year, they battled hard at the end of the regular season just to make it to the playoffs and at the end to win the World Series championship!

The Tampa Bay Rays have nothing to be ashamed of….as I mentioned in an earlier post, they have the lowest paid team in the league…but still played the season to win.   They also finished the regular season with over 90 wins after finishing last season with the worst record….looks like this young team will be around for a long time!

Congratulations Phillies and congratulations ladies….we now have a break from baseball until March 2009…enjoy!

Phillies World Series Champs in ‘80 and then ‘08???

OK ladies…this is an exciting Monday for Philadelphia…all things seem to be lining up for the Philiadlephia Phillies to win the World Series.  After an exciting Saturday night game that ended with a hit by catcher Carlos Ruiz to win the game 5-4 against the Tampa Bay Rays at close to 2 am.  And then on Sunday, to see a Homerun Derby-esque like game…where the Phillies won 10-2…we could see a national championship in Philadelphia for the first time in 25 years….this is craziness.   Currently, Philadelphia is leading the series 3-1 and have the fifth game tonight, being played in Philadelphia…if they lose tonight, game 6 and 7 will take place in Tampa Bay.   It seems that Philadelphians are hopeful…but also know that to be in Philadelphia there isn’t a championship until the game is over….so we will see.

Here are some key facts for you to bring to your Game 5 World Series gatherings…if you can socialize on a Monday night…

  • Many fans think that it is fate…the last time that the Phillies won the world series was in 1980 (aka ‘80)…well superimpose those last two digits and now they are looking at a potential win in ‘08..is it fate… well you decide.
  • Tonight’s pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies is Cole Hamels and he is 4-0 in the playoffs….if he keeps his streak alive then the Phillies will be the World Series champions.  I have written about Cole plenty of times before because 1. he is super hot and 2. most guys love his playboy centerfold wife…..good to know….
  • In last night’s game, two of the Phillies put themselves in the record books.  The first was Ryan Howard (potential MVP for the National League)…he had two homeruns in the game, which has not been done for the Phillies since 1993 when Lenny Dykstra had the same kind of night.  The second record was that Joe Blanton, the starting pitcher for the Phillies last night hit a homerun, which is something that no pitcher has not been done in the World Series game since 1974…
  • Now for the Tampa Bay Rays…Evan “Don’t call me Eva” Longoria and Carlos Pena, were the two top hitting threats for the Rays during the regular season…well, it looks as though they seemed to have hit a slump…they are a combined 0-29 with 15 strikeouts during the World Series games…seriously, not the time to hit a slump….
  • Tampa Bay Rays’ B.J Upton hit the record books in Game 3 of the World Series…he became the first player to steal 3 bases in a World Series since 1968 (Lou Brooks on the Cardinals held the record previously)

I was able to go to the World Series Game 4 last night…and I will tell you Philadelphia is itching for a win…the love screaming “EVA, EVA, EVA” when Longoria from the Rays gets up to bat…it seems to be getting in his head.   I read reports on the Philadelphia websites that say that the police & emergency response teams are gearing up with plans for ensuring all fans safety if the Phillies do pull away with a victory…this is drama that any girl would want to watch unfold…I know I will be DVRing tonight’s Gossip Girl episode, which is a must watch every week for me.

For those who are not into the World Series, there is also Monday Night Football on…the matchup is the Indianapolis Colts at the undefeated Tennessee Titans.  If this will be where your man’s interest is…here is some information to get you talking….

  • The Colts are 3-3 and the Tennessee Titans are 6-0
  • The Titans’ 6-0 record is the lenghthiest winning streak since their 11 straight wins in the ‘93-’94 season…but at that time they were the the Houston Oilers…the franchise moved to Tennessee in 1997.
  • The QB for the Titans is Kerry Collins – this is his 14th year as a QB.  He is the starting QB after Vince Young went “AWOL of sorts” and had to go to rehab for a mental evaluation to learn how to deal with all of the pressure of being a starting QB in the NFL and the fame that comes with it.  Young sits on the sidelines now as the back-up so that he can learn from the older veteran, Collins.  Who knew such drama could exist on something other than Dirty Sexy Money  or Grey’s Anatomy????
  • The Colts are 15-11 against the Titans…so we will have to see if the Titans can pull away with a win and close the gap here….

Alright…well I know Mondays stink in general, but tonight should offer a lot of good “drama” in the sense of sports….be back tomorrow to discuss the results of the World Series game 5 match-up….

What Kind of Docs do these Pro Football players go to???

Ok giries…I know that last week my NFL post centered around the injuries of some of the players…Romo’s pinkie, Aaron Rodgers with his shoulder injury and of course, “his hotness” Brady with his on-going knee injruy.  Well, the title of today’s post will probably lead you down the same path…but only for a second or two…my question is around the injuries of the two top QBs in the league…Peyton Manning, the QB of the Indianapolis Colts…he had a knee injury over the summer that even kept him out of playing during the preseason…and now it turns out that the had to have a surgery during the preseason to remove a staph infection to his knee…there are even rumors that it was that MRSA staph infection…craziness.  Then, as I mentioned last week, Tom Brady aka “major good looker” had to have multiple surgeries to his injured knee because of infection.  What the HELL…don’t they see the top docs????  Peyton seems to be better…but we better hope that Brady also gets better because the female population that does watch football might drop off if there is no hope of a Brady sighting…

Speaking of Brady…if you missed the Gisele’s appearance on Regis & Kelly on Friday…there was a tiny slip up….apparently they showed a clip of Gisele’s dog on her bed and it appears that the dog is laying on someone, whose foot is peeping out of the covers…when asked if it is Brady…Gisele was speechless and blushed and then laughed.  I have the You Tube clip below…I am warning you it is long…but if you are reading this while sitting in front of football…you will probably find this more entertaining….plus Gisele and Kelly Ripa are doing karaoke…so that will provide you with some good laughter…and maybe prevent you from eating chips and dip on a relaxing Sunday afternoon…

Now, onto some facts for the NFL (Week 8) games this weekend….

Atlanta Falcons (4-2) vs Philadelphia Eagles (3-3) – 1PM EST, FOX

  • Both the Eagles and the Falcons are coming off of their BYE week….probably a good thing for the Eagles as their key running back, Brian Westbrook had time to recover after suffering fractured ribs a few weeks ago…rumor has it that he will be playing in tomorrow’s game.  Also rumored to be back from the injury is Kevin Curtis (WR) and Reggie Brown (WR).  The Eagles should be able to rely on more passing tomorrow to keep Westbrook healthy.
  • Now…as history has shown…the Eagles should win tomorrow’s game because of their BYE week…they are 9-0 following a BYE week with Andy Reid as the coach…do they really want to break that streak?  The Falcons are 10-9 all time following a BYE week
  • The Falcon’s QB, Matt Ryan will be having a homecoming of sorts…he is from Exton, PA (which is right outside of Philly)….should be interesting to see how Eagles Fans react to more than average amount of Falcon’s fans in the stadium.  Ryan has done unexpectedly well for the Falcons and completed his first career 300+ yard game against the Chicago Bears right before their BYE week….

NY Giants (5-1) at Pittsburgh Steelers (5-1) – 4:15PM EST FOX

  • The Giants have lost 2 of the last 3 games against the Steelers…although they have all been played at home for the Giants….when the Giants play in Pittsburgh they are 5-1-1…question is…can the Giants keep up this trend?
  • Plaxico Burress (Wide Receiver on the Giants)…now he is just a hot mess.  He was fined $45K this week for a number of penalities that he committed in Week 7.  A few weeks ago, I mentioned that he was fined and under suspicion for a domestic abuse case…this guy really needs to get it together.   Also to note…Burress was on the Pittsburgh Steelers until 2004…so that always makes for good television…can he score a touchdown against his old team and will he do some hilarious touchdown dance as a result? ?? Only time will tell….
  • Some analysts believe that this may be a preview of this year’s Super Bowl match up …a lot of other teams have been plagued with injuries, while these two teams have had solid starts with classic style play….this will be a big one.

Other things to note this week….

  • As I mentioned last week…this week is the annual NFL game that is played in London, England.  The San Diego Chargers are playing against the New Orleans Saints.  I say “annual” but in reality, this is the second year that the NFL is playing in London and the third time that the NFL is playing on international turf…the only other location was Mexico City.   This game will be on at 1PM EST, CBS.
  • BYES for the week:  Bears, Bronco, Packers and Vikings – therefore, if the people in your life are fans of these teams you may have a chick-flick Sunday…

Besides the NFL…there is also Game 4 of the World Series…Tampa Bay Rays at the Philadelphia Phillies….the game is on at 8:30 EST, FOX

Alright…enjoy your Sunday….be back with some World Series and Monday Night Football info later…

Who Knew “Dotting the i” Was Such a Big Deal?

You are probably wondering what I mean…well, as you get through this post, the title will make a lot more sense.  Just so we are all on the same page today, we are in week 9 of college football and there are about 6 more weeks to go.  If you can recall when I started this blog I knew NOTHING about college football but I think we have all learned a lot this season….

This week I am focusing on two big games that have a lot riding on them.  With only a few weeks left in the season, every win or loss can affect whether or not a team makes it to a bowl game (more to come on those when it really matters).

ESPN’s “College Game Day” game:

#3 Penn State at #9 Ohio State

  • To date, Penn State is undefeated…Ohio State has one loss, which came in the third game of the season when they lost to USC 35-3.  That is pathetic…but they must be doing something right to still be ranked in the Top 10.
  • The quarterbacks are going to be in the center spotlight for this week.  Penn State’s QB, Darryl Clark is from Ohio, while Ohio State’s QB, Terrelle Pryor, is from PA.  Now this is where things get really interesting.  Pryor is a freshman and was the most sought after player in high school football…he was deciding between two schools, Ohio State and Penn State.  As I already noted…he chose Ohio State…so if Penn State loses and they are knocked out of the top 10…they are going to be pissed.
  • Penn State is 0-7 at Ohio State since 1978…can 30 years make a difference and will they finally win?
  • Now the whole “dotting the i” thing…ok, so this is centered around the Ohio State band…that’s right ladies, I said the band.  I recently realized how big of a deal the band is at these big college football games, but this tradition is one of the biggest I’ve heard.  I am including a YouTube video so you can get the whole experience…but basically this is how it goes.  At all of the Ohio State home games, the band marches on the field at the beginning of the game and spells Ohio in script.  The person who gets to “dot the i” of the word Ohio is especially important because they stand out by themselves.  This honor only goes to a senior…however there have been 3 instances where a non-OSU person has “dotted the i”…Jack Nicklaus, Bob Hope and Woody Hayes.  I can tell you right now that this morning when I woke up to research some college football stuff, I didn’t think I would be talking about the band…but hey there’s a first for everything!

Famous Alumni – Penn State

  • John Aniston (Jennifer Aniston’s dad)…I know, it’s a stretch…but if you do like soap opera’s I think he used to be on Day’s of Our Lives
  • Gene Kelley – he died…but was in Singin’ in the Rain - I never saw it, but I know the song
  • Larry Johnson – running back for the Kansas City Chiefs – it is rumored that last weekend he spit on a girl at a club and got arrested…now that’s some class…seriously, who spits on anyone…let alone a girl?
  • Kerry Collins – quarterback for the Tennessee Titans
Famous Alumni: Ohio State
  • Patricia Heaton – Everybody Loves Raymond
  • Richard Lewis  - the comedian
  • Jeffrey Dahmer – the serial killer (although, I am pretty sure OSU would rather us not know he is from their school)
  • The Hamm Brothers  - the two twin gymnasts who were supposed to be in the past summer olympics, but suffered injuries right before
  • Bobby Knight – famous basketball coach – especially for his reign at Indiana University
  • Kirk Herbstreit – he is on ESPN’s College Game Day
  • Jack Nicklaus- famous golfer…but didn’t graduate from OSU
#6 Oklahoma State at #1 Texas (3:30EST, ABC)
  • After two huge wins…Texas was the first unanimous #1 pick by the AP poll in over a year
  • In Oklahoma State vs Texas match-up, Texas has won 10 straight times and 20 of the past 22 games
  • Last year, Oklahoma State was leading the game by 21 points in the fourth quarter and wound up losing by 3.
Famous Alumni: Oklahoma State
  • Garth Brooks – country singer
  • Gary Busey – actor & legendary cokehead (not so funny)
  • James Marsden – actor in X-men  and 27 Dresses
Famous Alumni: Texas – already covered…but here they are again
  • Laura Bush & Jenna Bush (looks like we know who Laura’s favorite is…)
  • Matthew McConaughey – do I even need to comment…what’s up shirtless
  • Farah Fawcett – actress
Alright, so besides all of the college football games, tonight is Game 3 of the World Series.  Right now the series is tied 1-1…the teams come up to Philadelphia to see who will break the tie.  Should be interesting to be in PA tonight with the big Game 3 on and also the big Penn State game…hopefully you have friends around because the men in your life will definitely be preoccupied tonight and not paying any attention to you…I might go check out High School Musical 3 (just kidding…sort of…)
Back tomorrow with NFL stuff…

Phillies vs The Rays…What you Need to Know

To start…in case you are completely in the dark…the Phillies vs the Rays refers to the two teams in the 104th World Series.  The World Series kicked off on Wednesday night and started with a Phillies win.  At most we have one more week of Baseball until Spring Training starts in late February…this is music to my ears. However, I will say I have a new found respect for the good looks of baseball players…I mean, there are some hot players out there…a discussion for another time.  For now, it is good to know some facts about these two teams in case you are at a World Series party this weekend (there are games on Saturday and Sunday night this weekend).

I apologize for not getting this information to you earlier in the week, but I was out of commission for a few days….but I can assure you…a lot of these facts should impress anyone that you happen to be around this upcoming weekend.

Phillies’ Knowledge…

  • The Phillies’ opponent, the Tampa Bay Rays, are in the AL East…this does not bode well for the Phillies.  Historically the Phillies have been to the World Series 5 times…when playing a team from the AL East they are 0-4 and 1-0 against an AL West team…too bad the Angels didn’t make it to this year’s World Series….they are from the AL West and for those Phils fans who believe that history repeats itself this would be a much better predictor of how this series would go….From a girl’s perspective…I think that the Phillies should just hope for some frost while they are at home…I can’t imagine that the Tampa Bay Rays would hold up too well in the cold weather….but that’s just my perspective.
  • The Phillies’ closer Brad Lidge is 47 for 47 for the season…ok, so what in the world does this mean…To start, the closer is someone who comes in at the end of the game and when a team is winning and pitches the last inning for 3 quick outs to “close” the game with the win…this doesn’t always happen, however the Phillies’ closer hasn’t blown a game this year…can he keep up this record throughout the World Series?  Will he get the chance to close more games?  He did in Game 1 with success…
  • Although the Phillies made it to the playoffs last year (where they were swept in the division series)…their season was shadowed with a rough statistic…the Phillies were the first team in any professional support to reach 10,000 losses…ouch that is a rough one.
  • One other observation that you might witness…if you are watching the World Series somewhere in Philly and notice that the sound on the TV is muted and the radio is on…that is because most Philly fans prefer to hear the beloved Harry Kalas announce the game (he has been announcing since 1971).  Since he is a local announcer he doesn’t get to call the game as an announcer on the national stage…per league rules or something like that…

Tampa Bay Rays Knowledge:

  • The Rays (formerly the Devil Rays) started out as an expansion team in 1998 along with the Arizona Diamondbacks…this was after the area had built Tropicana Field in an attempt to lure teams such as the White Sox, Giants or Mariners to move to Florida…when it didn’t happen, it seemed like the perfect place to be the home for one of the expansion teams.  The Arizona Diamonbacks have already won the World Series in 2001…I feel bad for the teams that have been around for 5 times as long and haven’t won a World Series..
  • Prior to this year, the Rays have never had a winning season…in fact last year they had the worst record in the league.
  • I find this next statistic to be DEPRESSING…most of the Rays team is young, the ages of their starting lineup in Game 1 were 29, 24, 30, 23, 27, 24, 25, 27, 28 and their Game 1 starting pitcher, Scott Kazmir is 24…what the hell…I feel ancient….I still think that when I am watching sports that the players are older than me…when in fact I am now older than most of them…especially for this team.
  • One of the Rays best young players is pitcher David Price… he was the #1 overall pick in the draft in 2007 out of Vanderbilt University.  So a year ago he was playing college baseball, and now he will be in the World Series possibly with the game on the line.  This may not seem like a big deal since in football and basketball there are no ‘minor leagues’, but in baseball it usually takes at least 2 or 3 seasons in the minor leagues for a draft pick to make it to the Major Leagues… to put this in perspective…you can compare this to Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada, when she gets picked to go to Paris in her first year as an assistant….this is a BIG DEAL.
  • Many people think the division that the Rays won this year, the American League East, was the best and most competitive division in the history of baseball.  The Rays won 97 games, Boston won 95, the Yankees won 89, and Toronto won 86… whats the big deal you ask?  Well, the Dodgers won the National League West with 84 wins, so they would have been in 5th place had they played in the AL East!

Alright…I think you should be good to go to impress those around you with some facts…the last thing to note…if you are watching the game and keep hearing “Eva Longoria” it is not a celebrity sighting at the game…I thought it was at first…the announcers are merely talking about the Rays third baseman EVAN Longoria…totally different…but I will say he is a good looking guy…

I’ll be back with College Football facts for the weekend tomorrow….

TGIF!

Week 8 Suicide Picks

Suicide picks for Week 8 of the NFL season….

1.  Washington Redskins – they are playing at Detroit vs. the Lions, who are absolutely atrocious this year with a record of 0-6.  If the Redskins win this weekend their record will be 6-2, a record they haven’t seen in over 8 years.

2.  New York Jets – the  NYJ are playing at home against the Kansas City Chiefs…another team is struggling with a record of 1-5.  Besides having a bad record, their first and second starting QBs are injured…which means their third string QB will be starting…this usually is not good news for a team….go with the Jets.

3.  Houston Texans – now ladies…this is a pick that I know seems odd…they Texans don’t have a great record (2-4)…however they are playing the Cincinnati Bengals who have 0 wins this season…in addition, they have key players side-lined with injuries, so I would say if you have to pick the Texans for a week, this most likely will be your best shot…

We Finally Know the Match-up for the World Series

This is going to be a quick post…but need to make sure you know what is going on in one of the biggest annual sports events…the World Series.  So, as I posted yesterday, last night was Game 7 of the ALCS…the winner of the game would be going to the World Series against the National League Champion Philadelphia Phillies.  Well….in a close game…the Tampa Bay Rays pulled it out against the Boston Red Sox in a 3-1 victory.

A few things to note…

  • Last year, the Boston Red Sox were the World Series Champions, while the Tampa Bay Rays had the worst record in the league.  Looks like times have changed, at least for the Rays.
  • The manager of Tampa Bay, Joe Maddon, started out the season with a mantra for his team to follow “9=8″…what??? Based on my logic, these two don’t equal each other at all….but, what Maddon meant was…if the 9 players on the team work together, than they will be one of 8 teams in the playoffs….pretty compelling stuff…I guess now the mantra is going to be 9=1…meaning if they play together they will be the World Series Champions
  • The home team for Games 1,2, 6, and 7 in the World Series will be the Tampa Bay Rays because the American League won the All Star game…therefore the American League team in the World Series has homefield advantage…that is the stupidest rule ever…but whatever…

OK…I will be back later with all you need to know about our World Series match-up…have a good Monday.

Really, you broke your pinkie finger?

So, ladies we are in Week 7 of the NFL football season and the ALCS is going into game 7….lots of 7’s …one more and we would have 21…not a bad hand at the blackjack table.

So you might be wondering what in the world the title of this post means….well, it seems that the quaterback of my least favorite team (the Dallas Cowboys) has an injury and can’t play…that’s right ladies, Tony Romo (BF of Jessica Simpson) has a broken pinkie finger….WOW…you can’t play with a pinkie finger injury?  Thank goodness these QBs don’t deliver kids….In reality, a broken pinkie finger is a big deal when you are throwing the ball throughout a game…

Don't cry Tony its only a pinkie

Don't cry Romo it's only a pinkie

Also, an update on most girls favorite QB (at least in the looks department)… Tom Brady underwent a second surgery to his injured knee because of an infection…seriously docs…you need to get him better…this is half the reason us ladies watch the Patriots and football in general.

Now for some games of the week….

San Diego Chargers (3-3) at Buffalo Bills (4-1) – 1PM EST, CBS

  • To start…if you are wondering why the Chargers have played 6 games and the Bills only have played 5…well this is because the Bills have already had their BYE week and the Chargers will have their BYE in a few weeks.
  • Buffalo is coming off their BYE week …which was probably a good thing because they had a devastating loss to the Arizona Cardinals, which put an end to their hopes for an undefeated season.
  • The Chargers star player is running back LaDainian Tomlinson (LT) – for all of you girls who have boyfriends, husbands or colleagues who play fantasy football, LT was the #1 draft pick and he is causing a lot of frustration this year, since he has been slowed by an injured toe (again….thank goodness he doesn’t have to go into labor some day!)
  • Next week the Chargers play the New Orleans Saints in London….yes London, England.  I guess the NFL thinks that if there is a game in England it will help to gain some European interest in the American version of football….really not sure how effective this is….

Indianapolis Colts (3-2) at the Green Bay Packers (3-3) – 4:15 EST CBS

  • This is a big game for QB Peyton Manning  because it is probably the last time he will play at Lambeau Field.  Lambeau Field is one of the most famous football stadiums in the NFL and is home to the Green Bay Packers.  Peyton Manning is getting up there in age, and because of the way that NFL scheduling works the Colts won’t play at Green Bay again until 2016…so unless Peyton is still playing when he is 40 or if he gets traded to another team…this is it for him and Lambeau Field…no pressure Peyton.
  • The QB for the Packers is Aaron Rodgers (subject of my very first post)…anyway, if you can recall, this is his first season as a starting QB and he has been doing very well…however, he is also injured…his injury seems a little worse (injured shoulder), but he is playing in today’s game.

Besides football….there is also the Game 7 of the ALCS, which is a big deal because whoever wins tonight’s game will be going to the World Series.  Earlier in the week, the Tampa Bay Rays were leading the series against the Boston Red Sox 3-1…but it appears that history may be repeating itself as the BoSox have turned the series around by winning the last two games and bringing the series to 3-3.  Boston has been in a similar predicament two other times in the past 25 years.  In 1986 they were down 3-1 when they turned the series around and won 4-3 after 7 games.  In 2004, the Boston Red Sox were losing the ALCS by 3 games and won the next 4 games and then also won the World Series.  If I were the Tampa Bay Rays, I would make sure that I go in to the game tonight with my A game…because there are a lot of signs pointing to a win by the BoSox…

OK, girls I am off to do some outlet shopping….you might be noticing a trend, I love to SHOP….but then I will be back to watch some of these games….I’ll be back tomorrow with the results of the baseball game and some other highlights.

A Big Apology…a Little College Football

Ok ladies…I need to start off today and apologize for my post yesterday (although at this point it is corrected).  But for all of you who subscribe to my email, I trusted my husband and NOT my intuition…..if you got my email, you know what I mean.  Basically, I posted my last blog at the top of the seventh inning of the Tampa Bay Rays vs. Boston Red Sox game.  At that point, the Rays were winning 7-0.  My husband told me it was “a lock” and that the Phillies would DEFINITELY be playing the Rays in the World Series since they were already winning the ALCS 3-1.  However, I was quickly reminded the next morning when I woke up that you can never count on anything as FINAL until it is over.  So, I apologize for originally telling you that the Phillies would be playing the Rays…in fact, we still don’t know the World Series match-up yet…maybe after Saturday’s game…but we will see.

Now, onto the usual Saturday fall talk…College Football.  There are two games that I will cover this week….one of course being the location of  ESPN’s College Game Day….so here we go…

#11 Missouri at #1 Texas (8PM EST, ABC)

  • So, if you recall. last week I talked about the big Texas v Oklahoma game…Oklahoma should have been the lock, I mean, they were ranked #1, but Texas wanted the win more, and guess, what they won….now, Texas is #1 and Oklahoma is #4….
  • Texas should be able to maintain their #1 position if they win this game…based on history, they should definitely have this game.  Missouri has not won in Austin (homefield for Texas) since 1896….if only I could find a bottle of champagne that old…can you even imagine????
  • The odds are also on Texas because Missouri remains winless in the last 10 games it has played against the #1 ranked team….
  • It has been over 20 years since the Texas Longhorns have played a home game as the #1 ranked team….the fans should be crazy, and the guys in your life will probably be watching closely for the fans in the stadium.. apparently they are a scene in themselves….

Michigan vs #3 Penn State (4:30PM EST, ESPN)

  • OK, to start…I would hope that whoever at Penn State scheduled this game had a very good feeling that Penn State would win this week…it is their homecoming…and the home team NEVER wants to lose during HOMECOMING weekend…..
  • Penn State hasn’t beaten Michigan in 12 years…so here’s to the saying, there’s a first for everything…at least since the last time I can remember.
  • Penn State’s defense hasn’t allowed a team to score more than 14 points (2 touchdowns w/ extra points) all season….it seems like they are solid, but many critics wonder if they have played any “real” teams this year….we’ll see how they fare next week when they play #12 Ohio State….

So…lessons learned…don’t count on the “lock of the year”…trust the woman’s intuition…we will see if the Red Sox can pull off another win and bring the ALCS to a game 7.  The ALCS game will be on at 8 PM EST on TBS.  If fate is anything like 2004…Boston still has a chance…they were losing in the ALCS 3-1 and game back and wound up winning the World Series.  The other thing to note this week…if a team has a HOMECOMING…they probably scheduled their game against a team they knew they could beat…I have to admit though, after reading up on the history of Penn State vs. Michigan…it is anyone’s guess how this will go, but I think PSU can pull it off…if they do, don’t be surprised if ESPN’s College Game Day features PSU vs. Ohio State next weekend…only a few days will tell…

Ok, I hope you have a fantastic Saturday…I’ll be back tomorrow with your NFL info…
