So it’s Saturday, which means I am giving you the highlights of College Football for the day…not going to lie…I can’t wait for this season to be over…these guys don’t inspire me…maybe I need to go to another game or something and feel the excitement…What I can say about this week is the main highlight is in the first game I am writing about…and not about the players so much, but the head coach of Alabama. Now, I know that coaching is this man’s job, but he can sort of be looked at as a traitor in this week’s game…and he has balls for coming into LSU’s stadium…you’ll see the reasons why below. I don’t know…I think I might come down with the flu if I were in his situation. I am sure he is making the big bucks…but really, I wonder if he has any sense of loyalty???
#1 Alabama at #16 LSU (3:30 EST, CBS)
- This is where ESPN’s “College Game Day” will be broadcasted from for the week.
- LSU is probably happy to see the “College Game Day” guys in town. I was reading up on ESPN this morning and apparently when the College Game Day guys are there…LSU is 9-2 all-time, including 5-1 in Baton Rouge (hometown to LSU), although that one loss did happen to be to Alabama back in 1996.
- This game is huge for a couple of reasons at LSU. First, the #1 team in the country, who also happens to be one of their biggest rivals, is coming to town. Second, that #1 team just happens to be coached by Nick Saban… the same Nick Saban who coached LSU from 2000 – 2004, leading them to a National Championship in 2003 and restoring the program to the national spotlight. Saban decided that the grass was greener on the other side of the fence, in the NFL, after the 2004 season, and after a disastrous stint as head coach of the Dolphins (he only lasted 2 seasons) he returned to the college ranks to take over at Alabama, and he now has them at #1 in the country. This is the type of drama that could come right out of the movie Mean Girls.
- LSU is famous for having one of the best tailgate scenes in college football. Everything is cajun-style down in Baton Rouge, even the popular chant is “Geaux Tigers” instead of “Go Tigers”. The tailgating fare is legendary: jambalaya, oyster gumbo, cajun sausage, crawfish etoufee, alligator stew. Now, I am not saying I would enjoy this tailgating for the food…I don’t do alligator. And, can you imagine the stench in the men’s bathroom…but I am sure the overall tailgate is a good time.
So the big question around this game is….will Lee Corso (from “College Game Day” pick the #1 team in the country to go down two weeks in a row, and be correct? Last week Corso put on the Red Raiders (Texas Tech) hat in Lubbock and they ended up taking down #1 Texas in a dramatic finish… will he pick the Tigers(LSU) in another upset special?
#9 Oklahoma State at #2 Texas Tech (8PM EST, ABC)
- Both teams are in the Big 12 Conference South Division…which is ridiculously strong this season.
- Texas Tech is fresh off beating then #1 Texas last Saturday night and now they have to face another Top 10 team… before facing #4 Oklahoma in Norman, OK next week! Even the 4th place team in the Big 12 south is better than the first place team in most conferences, which is pretty remarkable…. four of the divisions teams are ranked in the Top 10 in the nation.
- As I mentioned before, Texas Tech knocked off Texas on the last play of the game last week, scoring a touchdown in a dramatic finish that set off a Texas-sized celebration on the field in Lubbock.
- Check out the video here, it was pretty exciting stuff…it’s about two mins long…but watching the crowd storm the field is pretty crazy!
